Inflammation 101

Let me start off by saying:
We all have experienced, or are currently experiencing some type/form of inflammation in our bodies.

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is a main component in the body’s defense system through the activation & response of the immune system.
In a sense, inflammation is good; it’s a sign the body is actively attempting to get rid of something potentially harmful.

When something is inflamed we usually think of something external, like a cut or a bruise. When it’s red, swollen, and tender. That is all correct, however, inflammation takes on different forms within us. It’s important to keep inflammation at a minimum, or it could lead to a rapid decline in your health.

There are two types:
-Acute Inflammation: a condition that occurs within a short time span and may last for just a few days to a week.
-Chronic Inflammation: a condition that is
slow, long-term that lasts several months to years.

There is really no such thing as something being “anti” inflammatory, it’s more that it is inflammation-modulating. Controlling inflammation as opposed to getting rid of it completely.

What form can inflammation take on?

Inflammation can look like something as simple as a cut that is red, throbbing, and hot. It can also transform into our most common diseases such as:

Alzheimer’s, Arthritis, Asthma, Cancer, Diabetes, Hashimoto’s, IBS, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), + Common Skin Conditions just to name a few…

This doesn’t disregard other non-autoimmune diseases such as Heart Disease

… and the list goes on. The reason these common diseases are in the category under inflammation is because they are auto immune diseases. In the case of an autoimmune disease, the body attacks it’s healthy cells leading to constant chronic inflammation. This can easily lead to the degration of your body more rapidly.

How to Prevent & Control Inflammation

Eating “anti” inflammatory foods + consistent exercise or movement of the body. The first one’s a given, but what about exercise? Well, your body’s immune system is held in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is the largest system within the body and needs constant circulation. It’s basically known as the “trash or sewer system”; everything dumps into it so the toxins in the body can be moved out. It does not, however, circulate on it’s own– it requires muscle movement. More exercise is required in a society that sits down 75% of their day! With healthy lymphatic flow, the immune system can more easily move to the inflamed areas of the body and address the issue. ~
Calendula is my go-to herb for inflammation! It works specifically with the lymphatic system to promote lymph movement.
